5G – the fifth generation of mobile wireless technology – is much faster than 4G and able to deliver speeds of over 1 Gbps. In addition, it has much lower latency. It is the next generation of mobile technology and is already available on all the three major US carriers.
But not all 5G is the same. For example, there are three different broad types available:
- Low-band 5G has maximum speeds that are just a little better than 4G, but it covers longer distances and so is more suitable for less built-up areas. This is the type of 5G that is mostly available in the USA.
- Mid-band 5G has much faster speeds than low-band 5G, but it doesn’t broadcast far and so requires more infrastructure to deliver. Mid-band 5G delivers speeds that are up to 10 times faster than 4G. This is the type of 5G that the rest of the world is mostly deploying.
- Millimeter-wave 5G only works in contained areas (like buildings or stadiums) but it is super-fast, and is the version that is capable of delivering 1 Gbps speeds.
How fast a carrier’s 5G service is depends on which type of 5G they have deployed at that location, so in practice, your 5G connection will not be much faster than 4G speeds if your carrier is using Low-band 5G. Expect speeds of between 200 and 500 Mbps from Low-band 5G networks.

Which wireless carriers have 5G in the United States?
All three major carriers – AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile – have 5G service across the United States, but coverage is far from total at this time. As a matter of fact, we are still in early days in 2021. Some of their MVNOs – smaller carriers that use the towers and cell sites of the major ones – also already offer 5G cellular service as well.
T-Mobile currently has the widest 5G coverage in the country. The carrier runs Low-band, Mid-band, and mmWave 5G networks. Mid-band 5G was widely used by Sprint and got transferred to T-Mobile as a result of the acquisition, giving the carrier an edge in its deployment and currently has the largest Mid-band coverage.
It calls Low-band service by the term “Extended Range 5G” and its Mid-Band and mmWave services go by the term “ Ultra Capacity 5G “.
Verizon runs Low-band and mmWave 5G networks, with the former taking a huge chunk of its coverage. This carrier markets its Low-band services as “ Nationwide 5G “. Its faster but smaller millimeter-wave 5G network is branded as “ 5G Ultra Wideband ” or “ 5G UWB .”
AT&T has Low-band and mmWave 5G networks, also with Low-band being the much wider technology. The carrier uses the terms 5GE, 5G and 5G Plus in its marketing, but 5GE is not really 5G; just a rebranded 4G service, while its “ 5G ” service refers to its regular Low-band and Mid-band 5G services. The term “ 5G Plus ” is used for its mmWave service.

These two budget Android phones share similar dimensions: they both measure exactly the same. They weight almost the same thing – one weighing only 1g more than the other. They both have the same screen size, resolution, and type. Likewise, they both have a punch hole front camera, and they both have a circular camera module and a fingerprint reader at the back.
But that is not all. They also share the same battery capacity and charging technology. They are both 4G smartphones and are available in single and dual SIM options.

Nokia 3.4 vs Nokia 5.4 front: Can you tell the difference?
As far as definitions go, Nokia 3.4 and Nokia 5.4 can be classified as identical twins. They share enough DNA to qualify for that. But even identical twins have unique traits that differentiate them. And this is the case with these two smartphones.
Nokia 3.4 vs Nokia 5.4: The Differences
I have spelt out the similarities between these two phones. What of the differences? They differ in five key areas: processor, RAM, internal storage, cameras, and back panel. And from the naming scheme, you can safely assume which model is the better equipped of the two.
The Nokia 5.4 is a Nokia 3.4 with a more capable processor, bigger RAM options, bigger storage options, better front and rear cameras, and a different back panel. Let’s get into the details with our trusty comparison table.

| 3 GB / 4 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| 4000 mAh battery + 10W quick charging | 4000 mAh battery + 10W quick charging |
To break it down, the Nokia 3.4 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, while the 5.4 has a Snapdragon 662 processor. The processor is like the engine room of a phone. The more powerful the processor, the more powerful the phone.
What of RAM? RAM is the part of the memory of the phone that is used to open and run apps. If you love to switch between apps a lot, go with more RAM. Nokia 3.4 offers two memory variants – 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage, and 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage.
Nokia 5.4, on the other hand, is available in most countries in one trim variants – with 4 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. This may be different in your country.
The selfie camera on the Nokia 3.4 is an 8-megapixel snapper, while the 5.4 doubles that to 16 megapixels.
At the back, the 3.4 has a triple camera made up of a 13-megapixel main lens, 5-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The Nokia 5.4 has a quad camera configuration made up of a 48-megapixel main lens, a 5-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Both have LED flash for night photography.
The back panels of both devices have a striking difference. That of the Nokia 3.4 has a diagonally grooved texture that makes for an easier grip in the hand. You will not have to worry about the phone slipping off a surface easily.
But the back panel of the Nokia 5.4 is smooth and slippery, like glass. It isn’t glass though; it is plastic, but it feels and acts like glass. It is a more premium look and feel, but the device is more likely to slip out of your hand or off an inclined surface.

Nokia 3.4 vs Nokia 5.4: In Summary
Nokia 5.4 has a more powerful processor, more RAM, more storage, better cameras, and a more premium back panel than the 3.4 has.
In practical terms, with the 5.4 you get better smartphone performance, shoot better pictures, record better videos, and a more premium look.
Nokia 3.4 vs Nokia 5.4: Prices
From the specs and features, it is clear that the Nokia 3.4 is the more affordable of the two. The single SIM variant sells for $179.99 in the United States. That trim is not available in Nigeria, but you will find the 4/64 GB, dual SIM variant for ₦ 57,800 in stores across the country.
Nokia 5.4 is available from $249.99 for the 4/128 GB, dual SIM variant in the United States and other countries. In Nigeria, that same variant is available from ₦ 82,000 at brick-and-mortar stores, as well as online stores.
At the end of the day, which of these two you buy is likely a question of what your budget is. From my experience with both, you will be getting solid hardware, clean software, and good performance, along with two years of guaranteed software updates.
