Google Docs welcomed Gemini mid-last year. With AI integration, things have been easier on Google Docs, from summarising files, generating images, to sourcing information from the web. Google now introduces an update to let users choose what sources Gemini can get information from.

Gemini now sticks closer to your sources in Google Docs - 1

Google announced in a new Workspace updates blog post that Gemini in Google Docs can now offer source-grounded writing help. In the side panel of Google Docs, Gemini will automatically generate a list of sources from your documents, allowing you to choose which one from the list to serve as the ultimate source for writing assistance.

The company says this feature will help you get contextual and reliable output from Gemini , including querying available knowledge on a topic and getting accurate answers that are based on your needs. The AI tool will only suggest relevant content to your specified source, saving time from switching tabs.

To reference sources or files, you first link the files in your document and choose “Documents links” to ground on those files, contrary to sending the required files or sources in the prompt field. If the files are not linked in the document, you can add the files/sources individually via the prompt field.

Apparently, the new feature doesn’t have a toggle. It is widely available to Google Workspace users to simplify the writing process.
