The Android XR era started with Samsung launching the Galaxy XR headset . Headsets aren’t the only devices to be powered by this new software. Google and Magic Leap showcased their Android XR glasses prototype at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) event.
Both companies first teamed up in 2024, and have confirmed the extension of their partnership for three more years. Combining Magic Leap’s optics and manufacturing know-how with Google’s AI and display technology gives the Android XR glasses that offer a lighter option to AI interaction.
Magic Leap states in its press release that the glasses serve as both a prototype and a reference design for the broader Android XR ecosystem. Mixing Magic Leap’s waveguides and optics with Google’s Raxium microLED light engine, the glasses deliver sharper visuals in a light frame that can be worn all day. Shahram Izadi, Google XR VP, said the precision of Magic Leap’s optics helps digital overlays blend naturally with the real world.
The on-stage demo showed how Gemini AI could analyse the scene in front of you and respond instantly. With cameras, microphones, and in-lens displays, you can ask questions about whatever you’re looking at. For instance, if you’re walking down a street, you can ask questions about nearby buildings or shops, and the answers will appear directly in your view. Gemini can also help you pick out a rug based on your preference and style.
To feel more interactive, the glasses can even offer you some golf tips after a bad shot. The Android XR glasses will blend AI into everyday activities in a natural way.
Magic Leap won’t be selling its glasses and only wants to act as an AR ecosystem partner to help companies like Google bring consumer-ready devices to market. With the prototype already able to do this much, it likely won’t be long before Google releases the Android XR glasses that seamlessly blend AR with reality.
