Google made known its plans to completely replace Google Assistant with Gemini earlier this year. The company wanted users to interact more with Gemini as their main voice assistant forgetting Google Assistant. The original plan was to get that done by the end of this year, but it seems that’s no longer the case. Google wants to let Assistant stay for a little bit longer.

Users who still haven’t made the switch to Gemini still have some time to do that as Assistant isn’t going away this year any more. It will be sometime next year.

Google Assistant transition to Gemini in 2026

While there is no specific date from Google on when the transition will be complete, it does confirm that it will definitely be next year and no longer this year. According to Android Authority, Google confirmed in the Gemini Apps Help post that it will now continue to upgrade mobile users to Gemini into 2026. 2026 is a vague description without a month or day. It may as well happen in January or the middle of the year. Either way, users should still be watchful in switching to Gemini as soon as they can.

There’s also the news of Google transitioning Android Auto users to Gemini by March 2026. It could be that Google wants to make both transitions at the same time for mobile users. Google says it will share more details about this transition in the coming months. This gives users at least a few months to continue using Assistant before Gemini completely takes over.

The extended timeline makes it easier for users to get used to Gemini before their go-to voice assistant is gone. While Gemini can be very useful, it still doesn’t do everything Assistant does, or at least not in the same way.
