If you want to buy a Bluetooth device, you need to know what it can and cannot do. Can it playback stereo audio? Does it have audio and playback controls? Bluetooth profiles and protocols provide us with that information. So, before you buy that next Bluetooth headset or speaker, here is a list of Bluetooth profiles and protocols for you, as well as explanations of each of them, so you know what to look for on the box.
But first, what is Bluetooth, and how does it work? Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard that is used to communicate between two or more devices over short distances, without the need for a cable. It is suitable for transmitting small amounts of data and consumes very little power, when compared to other forms of wireless communication.
When we say that Bluetooth transmits data, we do not mean Internet data. Bluetooth does not use an Internet connection in any way. By data, we mean, bits and pieces of information. Now, let’s go on to define what a Bluetooth profile is, and examine how many of them there are, and what they do.

What is a Bluetooth Profile?
A Bluetooth profile defines the functionality that a device supports and can execute when it connects with another by Bluetooth. If both devices support the same profiles, then you are able to use and enjoy the features or functionalities that profile specifies.
Where only one device supports a particular profile, you will be unable to use the associated functionalities, because the other device is unable to communicate at that level.
List of Bluetooth Profiles
There are more than twenty (20) Bluetooth profiles in existence. Of the total count, there are four major Bluetooth profiles, as follows:
- HSP (Handset Profile),
- HFP (Hands Free Profile),
- A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), and
- AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Some other less common profiles are mentioned further down this article. HSP and HFP Bluetooth profiles are those required for typical, mono Bluetooth headset operations; A2DP and AVRCP are important for stereo headsets. Note that there are other Bluetooth profiles beyond these four (and those others are mentioned further down in the article), but for these are the most common because they are used in wireless headsets and earbuds. The next section provides more detailed explanations and information.

The Four Most Common Bluetooth Profiles List
HSPBluetooth Profile
HSP (Headset Profile) is one of the most common Bluetooth protocols and makes two-way audio communication between a headset and a phone possible. This is the default profile that Bluetooth headsets use.
Note though that it enables only mono audio on headsets. It does not support stereo audio. A Bluetooth wireless headset that supports only HSP is good for basic telephone calls and nothing else. It can’t play music from your smartphone and can’t be used to control audio volume.

HSP is the Bluetooth profile supported by the most basic and the cheapest Bluetooth headsets around. All you can do with them is take and receive telephone calls.
What is A2DPBluetooth Profile?
A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) is a Bluetooth protocol that enables a headset to stream high quality stereo audio wirelessly from a smartphone or other compatible device. The quality of the audio is much better, both for calls and for music playback.
If you want to buy a Bluetooth headset for listening to music from your phone, make sure that your devices specifications lists A2DP as a supported Bluetooth profile.
What is AVRCPBluetooth Profile?
AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile) is the Bluetooth profile that enables remote control functionality. By way of example, it lets a Bluetooth headset control media playback on your smartphone. Those Bluetooth headsets and loudspeakers that let you pause and resume music playback support AVRCP.

What is HFPBluetooth Profile?
HFP (Hands Free Protocol) is a Bluetooth profile that enables a two-way wireless speaker-phone to be used with a Bluetooth phone, and is usually found in Bluetooth hands-free car kits. This is like a twin sister to HSP Bluetooth protocol and on its own supports mono audio.
As a matter of fact, both HSP and HFP are the two most common Bluetooth protocols and you probably do not have to worry much about a headset supporting them. As such, when shopping, depending on your needs, the profiles to watch out for are A2DP and AVRCP.
Do not forget: if your Bluetooth accessory does not support a particular profile, even if your smartphone does, you will not be able to enjoy the features of that profile on the accessory in question. For example, if a headset does not support A2DP, you will be unable to listen to music from your smartphone on it. You will only be able to take and make telephone calls on it.

Other Common Bluetooth Profiles List
As said before, there are more than twenty (20) Bluetooth profiles in existence. Besides the four most popular ones already mentioned and explained above, here are some more commonly used profiles.
- Basic Imaging Profile (BIP) : This Bluetooth profile defines the ability to transfer and print images, as well as remotely control an imaging device.
- Basic Printing Profile (BPP) : If you need the ability to print text and documents over a Bluetooth connection, this profile makes that possible.
- File Transfer Profile (FTP) : Transferring files is one thing, being able to browse folders and locations on the connected device is another. This profile enables the ability to browse folders and locate files between two devices.
- Dial-Up Network Profile (DUN) : If you weren’t aware of it, it is possible to tether via Bluetooth, and this capability has been around for years. This Bluetooth profile is behind that functionality.
- Human Interface Device Profile (HID) : This is the Bluetooth profile that enables the use of wireless mice, keyboards, and other such devices.
- Personal Area Networking Profile (PAN) : This profile allows for the creation of a wireless area network over a Bluetooth connection.
- Video Distribution Profile (VDP) : This is the Bluetooth profile that makes it possible to stream video over a Bluetooth connection.
- Serial Port Profile (SPP) : Provides a virtual serial port over Bluetooth, allowing devices to communicate using a serial connection.
- Object Push Profile (OPP) : Used for sending contact cards, calendar items, and other types of objects between Bluetooth devices.
Understanding Bluetooth Versions 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 5.0, 5.2
Simply put, the higher the Bluetooth number, the faster data can be transferred, the more secure it is, and the less power your device consumes to maintain a connection. So two Bluetooth 5.0 devices can create a more secure connection between one another, transfer data faster, and last longer before needing their batteries recharged.
What is Bluetooth Low Energy or BLE?
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is not a Bluetooth profile. It is a light-weight connection that consumes much less power than regular Bluetooth. It was developed by Nokia and was introduced as part of the Bluetooth 4.0 core specification. It is used for connectivity with wearables and other gadgets that connect and talk to modern smartphones.
As such, BLE is widely applied for health care, sports and fitness, Internet connectivity (you knew that you can share your phone’s mobile data with other devices via Bluetooth ; didn’t you?), proximity sensing, alerts and time profiles, among others. When your smartwatch connects to your iPhone or Android smartphone, Bluetooth Low Energy is the culprit.
Does Bluetooth drain batteries?
Modern Bluetooth standards are highly efficient and thrive on maintaining connections without a huge battery drain. Think of your smartwatch or wireless headset: these devices are able to last for days while being connected to your smartphone. That speaks of how battery efficient Bluetooth is. Bluetooth has minimal impact on your device’s battery life, so you can leave it enabled for as long as you need it.
Why Is It Called Bluetooth?
Bluetooth was invented by a team of scientists working for Ericsson, the Swedish networking company. It is named after Harald Bluetooth, who was the popular king of Denmark in the late 900s.
Conclusion
That is the simple, layman’s explanation of Bluetooth profiles and standards. Where cost permits, always go for devices with all the Bluetooth profiles and with the latest version number.

The smartphone world has generally gone crazy over big displays, and manufacturers are latching on to it. But not everyone wants their phone big. If, like me, you are a lover of smaller smartphones, I have drawn up a list of the best compact smartphones you can buy today.

Because, despite the widespread obsession with bigger displays, there are enough smaller smartphones out there for you to pick from.

The best compact phones released in 2022
Samsung Galaxy S22

One of the best compact smartphones of 2022 is Samsung A22
With a 6-inch display, Samsung has released a flagship model that might just trigger a fresh race back to compact phones. Is Samsung looking to take Sony’s territory? Only time will tell. But this is 2022 and you get this fully featured compact handset with 5G connectivity, among other flagship perks.
iPhone SE 3rd Generation

With a 4.7-inch display, the iPhone SE 3rd Gen (also callediPhone SE 2022) is a super-compact smartphone, but it is no slouch. It has a top-performance processor, generous RAM, and the premium quality build that you have come to love about Apple’s products. If you want a really handy phone that does not compromise on performance, the iPhone SE 3rd Gen is perhaps the very best compact smartphone that was released in 2022.
Google Pixel 6a
Google Pixel 6a is one of the top compact smartphones released in 2022. It has a 6.1-inch AMOLED display, is powered by a Google Tensor chip coupled with 6GB RAM. It has a 4410 mAh battery and 18W fast charging.
The best compact smartphones released in 2021
It isn’t 2021 any longer, but the best compact smartphones released then are still very much up-to-date and cutting edge, so you really should take a look.
Apple iPhone 13 Mini

The iPhone 13 mini is the quintessential compact smartphone. With a 5.4″ display and the same powerful processor as its bigger siblings, you will not be giving up performance to have this handy device.
Apple iPhone 13
The iPhone 13 joins its smaller sibling on the list of the best compact smartphones you can buy today. Why? The display is a very manageable 6.1 inches (15.49 centimetres) only. It will fit in your pockets, small bags, and hands comfortably.
Samsung Galaxy S21
With a 6.2-inch display and slim bezels, the S21 is a highly compact cell phone and a great fit for Android lovers who want to keep it small and handy.
Google Pixel 5
Google has had a track record of making compact handsets, and the Pixel 5 is one of the best you can buy in 2021. It has a 6-inch display, a decent Snapdragon 765G 5G chipset, and a 4080mAh battery.
The best compact smartphones released in 2020
Sony Xperia 5 II

Sony Xperia 5 II
Sony is one of the last standing phone makers that produce compact smartphones. The Xperia 5 II is a September 2020 release and comes in a handy package with a 6.1″ OLED display, Snapdragon 865 chipset, 8GB of RAM, 128GB and 256GB storage options, and a microSD slot to expand your storage memory, should you desire to.
The battery is of 4000 mAh capacity with 21W fast charging, and there is an 8MP sellfie camera in front and a ZEISS 12MP triple camera at the back.
Sony Xperia 5 II is a proper flagship, so if you are hunting for a compact flagship, Sony Mobile has got you. This is probably the very best compact smartphone on this list today (September 2020). If you are looking for a smartphone that is not made in China , this is one as well.
How much does it cost? A flagship standard $950 only.
Google Pxel 4
The Pixel 4 is one of the best compact smartphones you can buy in 2020. A 5.7-inch P-OLED display gives it that refreshingly compact size, but it is a powerhorse with a flagship processor – Qualcomm SM8150 Snapdragon 855 – inside.
There is 6GB of RAM, coupled with 6GB of RAM. Storage memory is either 64 GB 128 GB, so you can make your choice. Typical of Google’s Pixel smartphones, there is no memory card slot.
There is a 12 MP + 16 MP dual camera at the back and an 8 MP selfie camera at the front. And then we come to what appears to be the Pixel 4’s weak point – the battery. It has a measly 2800 mAh capacity, but there is 18W fast charging for quick top ups.
Price is $500 USD.
Apple iPhone SE 2020

The iPhone SE (2020) is a replica of the iPhone 8 and packs Apple’s most powerful A13 Bionic under a 4.7″ display. Like all iPhones, it is well built and offers solid cameras, though in this case all you get is a single sensor rear camera. There are three variants – one with 64GB storage, 128GB storage, and 256GB storage. RAM is 3GB for all variants.
The smallish 1821 mAh battery is a worry, but it does has 18W fast charge to go with it. Lastly, fans of fingerprint sensor will be ecstatic, as that is available on this model.

Best compact smartphones released in 2018
Now, some of the best smaller smartphones available today in 2020 were launched in the last quarter of 2018 and so are current devices in the market. Let’s have a look at my recommendations.
Google Pixel 3
The Pixel 3 easily qualifies as one of the best compact smartphones available in the market today. It has a 5.5 inches display and was launched in November 2018, effectively meaning that it is a very up-to-date device if you are shopping in 2020.
What does it offer you? A 5.5 inch display, 2915 mAh battery with 18W fast charging, 64 and 128 GB storage options, stereo speakers, and Android 9 Pie. Being a Google phone, there is no question about it getting timely updates for another two years.

Nokia 7.1

Making this list of best compact smartphones in 2020 is the Nokia 7.1 mid-range smartphone. It has a display that is 5.84 inches in size with Gorilla Glass protection. On its feature list are a 3060 mAh battery with 18W fast charging, a Snapdragon 636 processor, 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB storage. It was launched in October 2018 running Android 8.1, but it is a Nokia, meaning that it gets fast software updates. Nokia 7.1 specs .
Apple iPhone XS

A stainles steel frame, gorgeous 5.8-inch screen, 4 GB RAM, and options of 64, 256, and 512 GB of internal storage is what you get from the iPhone XS. It is easily one of the best compact smartphones you can buy in 2020. The battery is a smallish 2658 mAh in capacity but there is 15W fast charging support.
Note though that there is no fingerprint scanner on the XS. It hit the streets in September 2018 with iOS 12, and being an iPhone, you have nothing to worry about in terms of software updates.

Nokia 6.1

The Nokia 6.1 has a 5.5-inch screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection and was launched in April 2018. There are 3 and 4 GB of RAM options available. For storage, you get to pick 32 GB or 64 GB. The battery is of 3000 mAh capacity and has 18W fast charging. Powering it is a Snapdragon 630.

Sony Xperia XZ2

With a 5.7-inch display, the Xperia XZ2 arrived in April 2018. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 845, 4 and 6 GB RAM options, 64 GB storage, and a 3180 mAh battery with support for18W fast charging. Sony’s trademark stereo speakers are here as well.
It is a shame that Sony Mobile phones are not as popular as they once were: the Xperia XZ2 is a solid device and one of the best compact smartphones in the market today.
Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact

Is Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact the best compact smartphone in 2020?
The XZ2 Compact has 5 inches of screen size, with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Like its bigger sibling, it arrived in April 2018 and packs 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB storage. It is also powered by a Snapdragon 845 chip, has stereo speakers, and a 2870 mAh battery with 18W fast charging. It launched with Android 8 Oreo.
The Xperia XZ2 Compact may be really small (5 inches is really, small in today’s world), but it does not skimp on features. This phone is the complete premium deal in a smaller package. True compact lovers will say that makes it the very best compact smartphone in the market.
Sony is perhaps the only smartphone manufacturer that has a history of commitment to producing compact smartphones, so that would be in order.
Samsung Galaxy S9

The Galaxy S9 is arguably the very best compact smartphone released in 2018. Apple fans will say that title belongs to the iPhone XS. That kind of face-off always makes for interesting watch.
But you won’t find another smartphone with a 5.8 inches display that packs as many features as the Galaxy S9 does. It arrived in March 2018 with a 3000 mAh battery, 15W fast charging, 4 GB RAM, and 64, 128, and 256 GB storage options.
