Many iPhone users with older models are getting a prompt on their device to download either iOS 18.7 or iOS 26. Which of these should you update your iDevice with?
In this video , I explain the main differences between iOS 18.7 and iOS 26, as well as which is better for your older iPhone.
iOS 26 vs. iOS 18.7: The Core Differences
The fundamental difference between iOS 26 and iOS 18.7 is that the former is a major annual operating system upgrade that delivers a new graphical user interface and new features to more up-to-date iPhone models, while iOS 18.7 is a final maintenance update that brings improved security and stability to much older iPhones.
- Scope and Purpose
- iOS 26 represents a complete new generation of the operating system. Its primary goal is to introduce major features, a new aesthetic, and significant changes to system behavior and core apps. It starts a new annual release cycle.
- iOS 18.7 is a point release for the older iOS 18 line. Its main function is to deliver crucial bug fixes, stability improvements, and essential security patches. It provides a secure alternative for users who are not yet ready to install the brand-new operating system.
- Design and Visuals
- iOS 26 introduces a major visual change with the “Liquid Glass” design language. This new look incorporates dynamic transparency, refraction effects, 3D icons, and realistic lighting to create a more immersive and layered user interface.
- iOS 18.7 retains the familiar look and design of iOS 18, which is based on a more minimalist, flat aesthetic. There are no significant, user-facing design changes in this update.
- New Features and Intelligence
- iOS 26 is packed with new functionality, most notably the integration of Apple Intelligence. This includes advanced, AI-powered features such as intelligent summaries, smart suggestions, and real-time translation across the system. Many of these high-end AI features are often exclusive to newer iPhone models.
- iOS 18.7 contains minimal new features. The focus is entirely on optimizing existing performance, which means most changes are behind-the-scenes and not noticeable to the average user.
iOS 18.7 vs iOS 26: Target Devices
If you get an update notification that offers you a choice between iOS 16 and iOS 18.7, it means that Apple thinks your device might not be able to handle iOS 16 smoothly. I recommend that you go with iOS 18.7. Why?
You just might find that your older iPhone runs well with iOS 18.7 and that you are okay with that. If your priority is having a stable iPhone that gets the job done without the fancy new look and features, go with iOS 18.7.
However, if you want the new AI features and the new Liquid Glass design and you are willing to risk ending up with some instability on your iPhone, iOS 26 is the way to go. Do note that once you update to iOS 26, there is no way to downgrade to iOS 18.7.
