Today in 2023, it is difficult to believe that as at October 2019, there were no 108MP camera phones in the market. Shortly after, the world’s first 108MP camera phone was announced. By the end of the next month, there were three in existence, and a year later, there were ten of them in existence.
At first, the idea of a 108 megapixel camera phone sounded more like a gimmick than something that would produce a real difference. But the world’s first 108MP camera phone, named Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro in China, and Xiaomi Mi Note 10 (and the Mi Note 10 Pro variant) in other countries, quickly knocked out that notion. It produced excellent photos. That was the first 108MP camera phone in existence.
It was launched in China in November 2019 and was not available internationally. However, its international version, Xiaomi Mi Note 10, was announced and launched that same month, as was the Mi Note 10 Pro, a more enhanced version.

These three phones used the Samsung 108MP ISOCELL module that was developed by a collaboration between Samsung and Xiaomi. In 2020, Samsung joined the 108MP camera phone party, deploying the module in its flagship range of devices. Another brand that has a smartphone with a 108MP camera module is Motorola.

How have phones with 108MP camera performed?
Xiaomi’s execution of 108MP camera phones have been superb, with model after model shooting to the top of the smartphone camera chart at launch. The Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro Premium Edition (and its international variant, Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro) made a splash and have remained two of the best camera phones around a year after launch.
But the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro showed up in February 2020 and the latter’s 108MP camera was ranked the best camera phone in the world . From Samsung’s camp, the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G (and later S23 Ultra and S23 Ultra) gave a good showing and have been ranked among the top camera phones in the world. Unfortunately, reviews of Motorola Edge Plus say its 108MP camera is good but has not quite lived up to its full potentials.
Of course, megapixel count is not the only factor in determining a camera phone’s photo quality. As such, there are other smartphones that do not have a 108MP camera that are ranked up there at the top of the charts. But if you want a camera phone that can capture lots of details, especially if you will be doing any editing and/or post-processing, the more megapixels it can capture, the better. This is where a 108MP camera stands out.
Note also that all of these phones with 108MP camera do not shoot in 108MP mode by default. Xiaomi’s cameras produce 27MP images, while Samsung’s produces 12MP images. Motorola Edge Plus also shoots in 27MP images in default mode. This is done by a process called pixel binning. But the option to shoot in full 108MP is there whenever you need it.
How much do phones with 108MP camera cost?
If you are interested in smartphones with a 108MP camera, how much should you be looking at? It depends. The good news is that there is a wide range of prices. For example, Xiaomi Mi Note 10, which was the most affordable of the lot back in 2020, cost about $455 only. In 2022, you can find Redmi Note 10 Pro for around $220, which is the most affordable cell phone with 108mp camera.
At the upper fringe are devices like Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Samsung S22 Ultra (released in 2022) costing as much as $1,099 and $1,170 respectively. The prices of all the others fall between these two extreme ends.

There are a number of 108MP camera phones that have been rumoured or confirmed to be on the way, as at the time of publishing this article. We will definitely see many more brands produce phones with 108MP camera in the near future. Xiaomi and Samsung have proven that the large megapixel count can be put to good use, and other smartphone manufacturers will want to get in on the action.

Samsung Galaxy M21s has been released in Brazil as the latest addition to the Galaxy M series. The Samsung Galaxy M21s is a rebrand of the Galaxy F41 which launched earlier this year. It features a massive 6,000mAh battery and offers 4GB of RAM.
The Samsung Galaxy M21s is built around a 6.40-inch full-HD+ (1080×2340 pixels) Super AMOLED display. It sports a 32MP snapper up front that takes care of selfies and video calls.
The Samsung Galaxy M21s launched with the Exynos 9611 processor which keeps this device ticking. It is hooked to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage that can be expanded via microSD card to 512GB. On the software front, the Samsung Galaxy M21s runs the One UI Core based on Android 10.
In the camera department, three rear cameras line up the back panel, with a 64MP sensor headlining the setup. This snapper is assisted by an 8MP secondary sensor, and a 5MP sensor. The Samsung Galaxy M21s launched with an enormous 6,000mAh battery that supports proprietary fast charging.
This device is available in two colour options, Black and Blue. It currently sells for BRL 1,529 ($285) and is available in a single storage variant.
