The rumors about Sony’s next flagship wireless headphones, likely the WH-1000XM6, are getting louder. It’s been a considerable three years since Sony unveiled the WH-1000XM5 . So, what can we expect from these highly anticipated cans, and will they be worth the upgrade? While Sony is keeping tight-lipped about the official release date suggesting a summer 2025 launch is highly probable. A recent FCC certification indicates Sony’s intent to release the new flagship over-ears to come to market. Specifically, the short-term confidentiality agreement ends on July 22nd 2025, logically anticipating a summer launch. Some reports even suggest a potential April or May release. One of the more intriguing rumors is a potential redesign, featuring a new hinge and detachable earpads. A recent regulatory submission indicates that the next iteration, the XM6 model, might be on the verge of being unveiled. The filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) suggests a minor redesign, featuring a new hinge and what seem to be detachable earpads.
- The Benefit: Easy ear pad replacement! No more struggling to pry off worn-out earpads and potentially damaging your beloved headphones.
However, don’t get your hopes up for a return to the folding design of the XM4s. The new hinge modifications don’t seem to indicate a revival of the folding design seen in the XM4s.

Internals: Bluetooth 5.3, Fast Charging, and (Likely) the Same Driver
Digging into the filings reveals a few tasty tidbits about the XM6’s internals:
- Bluetooth 5.3: A step up from the 5.2 used in the XM5s, promising a more stable and energy-efficient connection.
- Fast Charging: As seen in previous models, fast charging will likely be included.
- Driver Size: Diagrams suggest the 30mm driver size will remain unchanged. While some might lament the smaller driver compared to the XM4’s 40mm, the XM5s delivered a tighter, more detailed sound, so it’s not necessarily a downgrade.
Sound Quality
Sony has been steadily improving sound quality with each iteration of the WH-1000X series. The Walkman Blog suggests that the diagrams of the WH-1000XM6 appear to show a driver size unchanged from its predecessor. Compared to the 40mm drivers in the XM4s, the smaller hardware in the XM5s led to a more detailed and tighter sound, so while it’s likely not much will change audio-wise between the XM6 and what came before, that’s not necessarily going to be a bad thing. We can likely expect further refinements in noise canceling and audio processing to deliver an even more immersive listening experience.
What We Want to See
While the rumors are exciting, there are a few things we’re hoping Sony will include in the XM6:
- Improved Build Quality: Build quality took a slight step back with the WH-1000XM5, so hopefully their successors have a look and feel that justifies what I assume will be a premium price tag.
- Enhanced Noise Canceling: While the XM5s already offer stellar noise canceling, pushing the boundaries even further would be a welcome upgrade.
- Multi-Point Connectivity: Seamlessly switching between devices is a must-have feature for modern headphones .
- AptX Codec Support: Some audiophiles would love to see aptX codec support for higher-resolution audio.
Conclusion
Based on the rumors and speculation, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is shaping up to be a worthy successor to the XM5s. With a refined design, improved internals, and the promise of even better sound quality, these headphones are definitely worth keeping an eye on.
