The Redmi 9A and Redmi 9C phones have been launched in Malaysia, with these devices understood to be toned-down versions of the Redmi 9 released earlier this month. Both smartphones feature a 6.53-inch HD+ display with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage and a 5,000mAh battery.

Redmi 9A

The Redmi 9A is built around a 6.53-inch HD+ (720×1,600 pixels) LCD Dot Drop display with a 20:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the MediaTek HelioG25 SoC working in tandem with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage (expandable via microSD to 512GB) keeps this device ticking. This entry level device runs the MIUI 11 based on Android 10.

Redmi 9 series Launch - 1

Its single 13MP rear camera takes care of photos and videos while a 5MP front camera housed in a waterdrop-notch will take care of selfies. This smartphone boasts a 5,000mAh battery that supports fast charging at 10W.

Connectivity options available for this device include 4G LTE, a 3.5mm audio jack, and Micro USB for charging the device. It weighs 194 grams and measures 164.9×77.07×9 mm.

Redmi 9C

This dual SIM smartphone runs Android 10 with MIUI 11 on top. It also has the same display as the 9A and is powered by the octa-core MediaTek Helio G35 SoC which operates with up to 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage (expandable via microSD to 512GB).

This smartphone features a triple-rear camera setup with a 13MP main camera alongside a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. Up front, a 5MP camera takes care of video calls and selfies. The Redmi 9C boasts a 5,000mAh battery with fast charging support at 10W.

Connectivity options for this device include a 3.5mm audio jack, 4G LTE and micro USB port for charging. This device weighs 196 grams and measures 164.9×77.07×9 mm.

The Redmi 9A is available at $83 for the 2GB+32GB variant and is available in Twilight Blue, Midnight Grey, and Peacock Green colors. The Redmi 9C is priced at $99 for the 2GB+32GB variant and should be available for sale at the end of July. Certain reports suggest that both devices may have other variants, with the 9A expected to have a 3GB+32GB variant and the 9C expected to have a 4GB+64GB variant. However, there is still no clear confirmation regarding their different price points and availability.

The Redmi 8 is the latest Xiaomi device to get the Android 10 with an OTA update. A report from China says that users in the country have received the MIUI 11 version V11.0.1.0.QCNCNXM based on Android 10. The Redmi 8 launched in October of 2019 with the Android 9 Pie, and is now receiving the Android 10 update almost 8 months later.

This update brings a number of new features with it alongside a June Android security patch. The latest update has the build number MIUI 11.0.1.0.QCNCNXM and is about 2GB in size. This update brings all the improvements of the Android 10 alongside an upgraded June 2020 security patch.

Redmi 8 Now Receiving Android 10 Update - 2

Users are advised to back up their data before upgrading their device, as some apps seem to have compatibility issues with the new update. With users in China already receiving the update, the update is expected to roll out in other regions in the next few weeks.

With Xiaomi looking to bring MIUI 12 to more of its devices, it is great to see that they have not totally abandoned other devices and are still updating their older smartphones to Android 10. The company has specified that Redmi 8 is due to receive MIUI 12 update in the coming months.
