AI content, as annoying as it is sometimes, is everywhere. That high-definition image you saw a few minutes ago could be AI-generated. It’s getting difficult to tell, so Google is working to make this easier for you — finding out if an image is made with AI.
The new Gemini update will let you know if a photo was made or altered using Google’s AI tools. According to the company’s announcement , if a picture you upload has Google’s hidden SynthID watermark on it, Gemini will spot it and tell you it’s AI-generated. It’s a faster version of the browser-based SynthID Detector Google launched earlier this year, which required manual uploads.
All images produced by Google’s AI tools have the company’s invisible watermarks embedded in them. They include pictures from Google Ads, Vertex AI and Nano Banana Pro model used inside Gemini. These images also carry C2PA metadata, an industry-backed format that reveals how a piece of media was created or altered. With these two features in check, Google makes it easy to track AI content on the web, especially when it gets reposted, remixed, or spreads misleading narratives.
By building SynthID directly into the Gemini app, Google is turning this provenance that developers are familiar with into something regular people can use when surfing the internet.
Google Gemini AI image detector
The image detector does have a limitation though. It can only tell pictures made by any Google AI tool, but not those from other companies. At least it cancels out an option if you’re wondering if an image has been altered or generated by AI. To make spotting AI images easier, other companies have to make use of similar standards, adding watermarks to their images and including C2PA metadata.
For now, AI detection will work for just pictures. Google says it will expand detection to search results, audio, and video next.
