While travelling is still viewed by some as an opportunity to unplug from your digital self more and more people are utilizing apps to make their travels simpler, safer, and more fun. While mapping, translation, and currency converters remain the golden standards of travel applications, there are numerous apps out there that put a different spin on the genre. As a founder with experience across the tech spectrum, including travel, Matt Keezer , who helped found FlightHub in 2012, seemed like the perfect person to ask about these off the beaten path apps. He provided me with his top 3 travel apps for those looking for more than just the basics.

Top 3 travel apps - 1

Travel List

Travel List is an app that is dedicated to making sure that you have everything you need before you leave home. Designed to work with your phone’s calendar, this app is fully customizable to incorporate all kinds of trips, from road trips to the country, to business trips with several destinations. Scheduled alerts can remind you not just of general items, but time sensitive ones like chargers, devices, and documents you need to pack for specific trips.

Gate Guru

While many apps can track your flights, none do it as thoroughly as Gate Guru. This app goes beyond itineraries according to Keezer, giving you detailed information about the specific amenities available at the terminals you’ll be visiting and maps of the airports you’ll need to navigate over the course of your travels. Additional info includes weather, time zones, and other tips for surviving your latest airport experience.

ICE

While no one expects to find trouble on vacation it is always wise to plan for it. While nothing beats travel insurance for ensuring your overseas safety, apps like ICE can be a lifesaver. More or less a MedicAlert bracelet built into your phone, ICE can provide first responders with information regarding allergies, insurances, medical conditions, and medications all without unlocking your phone. This can obviously be a huge help if you find yourself needing medical aid while abroad.

Social Media is powering the next wave of media. We have seen and experienced how the likes of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter, are changing the way people communicate and disseminate information. Enter Believers Connect. This is a social network app that “helps Christian singles to connect for the purposes of friendship that can graduate to relationship and marriage”. We thought to try out this app, probably with hopes of meeting the One 😀

First of all, this app has a very beautiful design. All the UI element are polished and pleasing to the eyes. After installation, you’re asked to connect with your Facebook account – this saves you the stress of identification. Next thing, you enter your email address, Country and Area of Residence, followed by your relationship status.

Once that is done, you can now start meeting people. The “Chat” section is where you privately message people (just like we have on every other chatting platform). “Suggested Connections” , shows you people/matches, based on the information you entered. Here you can Like or Dislike people.

The “Interests” page shows all the people you’ve liked, those that like you, and your mutual likes. The “Heart-II-Heart” page is where you pour out your heart in words. This is similar to Twitter in a way though. You can choose to like or comment on people’s posts, yet it is a cool avenue to meet random people.

Beleivers-Connect-Extras - 4

The most unique feature on this app is the “Digital Library” . In this section, you find podcasts of Christian messages. They’re all available for free download, though I’m guessing it will be a paid service soon. You can download the messages and listen to them. Cool.

The app is free, but you’ll have to pay to gain access to more suggested matches. The upgrade also removes the ads that pop up from time to time as you navigate the app. See screenshot above. There are a few issues I had while using this app:

  • After registration, I could open the my homepage. Tried everything I could, no way. I had to clear the app data and relaunch it before it opened properly.
  • The “Suggested Connection” page refused to refresh or change. I tried and tried. After loading the first set of recommended people, that was it.

Hopefully, a software update will fix these issues.

Final Words

There is this Christian, or rather religious, feel to Believers Connect. Common sense should tell you that you have to mind your language while using this app, though we are guessing that you can get wild in the private chat section if your partner is game. This app reminds me a lot of Badoo – asides the Digital Library and Heart-II-Heart section, every other thing has similarities.
