We got an email from the Google Drive team notifying us of the new development about backups storage. Apparently, Facebook and Google have arrived at a deal that brings new benefits to users. The content of the email is reproduced below.

Due to a new agreement between WhatsApp and Google, WhatsApp backups will no longer count against Google Drive storage quota. However, any WhatsApp backups that have not been updated in more than a year will automatically be removed from storage. This policy will come into effect for all users on 12 November 2018, although some users may see the quota benefits earlier. To avoid the loss of any backups, we recommend that people manually back up WhatsApp before 12 November 2018.

WhatsApp backup - 1

WhatsApp backups are useful when switching phones

If you are one of those WhatsApp users who include photos and videos in their backups, this will make a significant difference in your Google Drive storage quota. If you are like the rest of us who do not, this will make no difference at all to you.

Google has a 15GB quota free for all Google accounts, and should you need extra cloud storage, you can buy more at the following rates:

  • 100GB for $1.99 per month
  • 200GB for $2.99 per month
  • 2TB for $9.99 per month

Meanwhile do not forget that any backups that have not been updated in over a year will be deleted, so do a manual WhatsApp backup before October 30, 2018. Also note that every time you create a WhatsApp backup using the same Google account, the previous backup gets overwritten and there is no way to restore that older backup.

German carmaker, Volkswagen , has announced that it is working on a new software operating system to power its next generation of electric cars. The new platform will be called “ vw.OS ” and will be introduced in VW brand electric cars from 2020 onwards.

The new auto software will connect all the sensors and controllers in each Volkswagen electric car and collect and process information gathered from them all to assist with autonomous driving.

According to a statement from the company, this means, for example, that “information gathered by a parking sensor could be linked to the steering, brakes, and high-definition maps to allow a car to park itself once an onboard camera spots a free parking space”.

A car-sharing business, called “We Share”, is also in the works and should kick off with a fleet of 2,000 electric cars in Berlin by the middle of 2019. This will later cover cities in Europe, the United States of America, and Canada.

vw.OS by Volkswagen - 2

Why is Volkswagen Developing vw.OS?

There are a number of auto operating systems in existence, so why is Volkswagen going the proprietary route?

For one, the carmaker says it would be easier to do over-the-air software updates for cars if the operating system was designed in-house, rather than depending on third-party software supplied by the different vendors providing various sensors.

In all, Volkswagen will be spending $4 billion (3.5 billion euros) from now till 2025 in developing these new digital businesses opportunities.
